This blog has recently had a make-over worthy of featuring in a 90s rom-com. We hope you like the new look! To celebrate the update, we thought we would share a bit more about us – so let’s get personal…
So, who are you?
We’re Matt & Lauren, a pair of almost-30-somethings. We’ve been together for over 10 years and married for 4. We’re originally from north-west England, but moved to Cardiff a few years ago for my post-graduate studies – I was very fortunate that Matt was happy to relocate with me!
Since moving to Cardiff we’ve accumulated more family members… 2 cats named Luna & Willow. Luna is an attention-seeking love bug; Willow is a walking existential crisis who likes the occasional pat on her own terms. They are both very weird, annoying, and adorable creatures.
How did you get into board gaming?
Our first experience of board gaming, in the true sense of the word, was when our friends invited us to their board game night to play Game of Thrones: The Board Game. I’ll be honest – the game wasn’t really my jam. But it gave us our first taste of what board gaming as a hobby could be. Shortly after, we invested in our first ‘tabletop’ board game: Pandemic. And then Carcassonne after that, and then Dead of Winter after that…the rest, as they say, is history.
What do you like most about being a board gamer?
Well first of all, shockingly, are the games themselves. There are so many board games out there, with more released every day. With such a wild variety of types, themes, styles, art, and gaming mechanics – it’s almost too much to choose from! But it feels there’s always a game for everyone to enjoy. It’s a real buzz when you find a gem of a game that you never expected or get friends and family invested with a game they resonate with.
Then there’s also the social aspect. It feels good to sit down together as a couple, after a long week, and unwind playing games. Or bond with family and friends over a gaming marathon. Or find new friends at board game conventions. We have lived and laughed so much since board games became ‘our thing’, and I feel like it can only get better from here.
